epd-Interview with Dr. Ilse Wehrmann, 30.07.2010

BREMEN (EPD). The Bremen pre-school ecudation expert Ilse Wehrmann criticized the plans of federal family minister Kristina Schröder (CDU) to requalify unemployed men as pre-school teachers for child day care centers in a two-year program. In an interview with EPD on friday, Wehrmann objected: "While it is correct that more men are urgently needed in child care services, a quick two-year program is not the correct approach - that would put an end to professionalism."According to Schroeder, starting next year, the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) will be offering a requalification program for men to enable them to train as child care workers within a two-year period. According to Wehrmann, traditional training programs for child care workers in day care facilities can vary among the federal states but on average take five years to complete. "In the pre-school area, for example, the educational level must be raised by a college education and must not be shortened ," she cautioned. "Child care workers play a key role in the education of small children," emphasized Wehrmann. Their qualifications and working conditions are decisive factors for the teaching quality of the work in day care facilities, as well as for the future prospects of children. "We need male role models," said Wehrmann in consensus with the Minister of Federal Finance. However, their number should not be increased through accelerated courses of study. In the Scandinavian countries, the child care professions are more attractive to men because they enjoy greater social recognition and are better paid. "In Germany, many day care center jobs are part-time positions –which do not pay enough to live on (or die)", criticized the former Chairwoman of the Federal Association of Evangelical Day Care Centers.
